Financial Career: Tony has worked in client locations in the UK and South Africa as a Business and Financial Advisor to private clients, business owners, public corporations and financial institutions.
Since 2001 he has operated his own UK practice, Mentor Financial Services Limited which provides a coaching-style consultancy to CEOs of SMEs in all areas of business improvement, strategic financial planning and successful exit strategy implementation. Mentor also provides high-level training and new product development for financial services groups in the UK.
Prior to Mentor he was Managing Director of the Professional Alliance, a division of Inter-Alliance PLC, responsible for developing relationships with the legal and accountancy professions, namely the Law Society and Institute of Chartered Accountants – and their regulated members.
From 1995 – 1998 he was an Independent Financial Adviser and Corporate Benefits Manager with Independent Financial Partnership Ltd, a leading UK financial advisory group. He specialised in private equity financing and venture capital, assisting the Inter-Alliance Group in becoming listed on the London Stock Exchange’s Alternative Investment Market (AIM).
Prior to that he formed his own financial training consultancy which he later sold to DBS PLC, one of the largest UK financial services networks. This followed another successful business he founded and sold, The Annuity Bureau, the first UK open market option clearing house for pensions.
In 1987 Tony moved to the UK from South Africa becoming Birmingham Branch Manager and legal adviser for Royal Life Holdings Limited.
Legal & Law Enforcement Career: Tony began his career in 1970 in the British South Africa Police in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) as a uniformed policeman then into CID and Special Branch duties. He carried out investigations into homicide, fraud, prosecutions and anti-terrorist operations being honourably discharged five years later to pursue a law degree.
Following graduation, he gained admittance to the Supreme Court of South Africa as an Advocate. He later became Legal Advisor and then Managing Director of Corporate Executive Services Ltd within Old Mutual PLC, the largest South African insurance company. There he developed a legal and financial planning sales force and was one of the early pioneers of fee-based financial services on the African continent.
Academic: BA (Econ), BComm, LLB (Rhodes University, South Africa); Qualifying exams of the Institute of Life & Pensions Advisers (South Africa) , Chartered Insurance Institute (UK), Life Insurance Association (UK); Personal Finance Society (UK), Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc, and various financial and business courses. Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (UK).
Professional: Chartered Insurance Practitioner (CIP); Certified Financial Planner (CFP™); Fellow of the Institute of Life & Pensions Advisers (now Financial Planning Institute–South Africa); Associate Member of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII); Certified Member of the Personal Finance Society (Cert PFS); Certified Member of the Society of Mortgage Professionals (CeMAP); Associate Member of the Institute of Financial Planning (AIFP). He has been an invited speaker at several seminars and presentations and delivered corporate training to private and public companies in the UK and South Africa. Tony recently gained the distinction of being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).
